Guest Post by Apprentice Acolyte Frater Aren – Why the Coven of the Catta Makes our Evoking and Invoking Pentagrams Starting at the Spirit Point

I have been making my pentagrams for the four directions, evoking the Archangels therein, in a certain way for 33+ years. I know that in the G.’.D.’. and before that Freemasonry and after that Crowley they attributed certain elements to the points of the pentagram. It looked like, in their method, we in the Coven of the Catta, starting the pentagram at the top point then tracing clockwise to the bottom right etc,  were Evoking the element Fire, which made sense and which is appropriate for Witchcraft and working to connect with the Spirit through the elements to eventually make a Cone of Power to Heal people (the prime working of our Coven then, now and in the future).

My friend JJ and Apprentice Aren came up with this brilliant insight based on his having read 99% of every book on Witchcraft since he was a teenager, which is almost three decades of books from the earliest to the most recent, spanning probably the cunning man and witch healer shameness from anthropological works going back to 5000bce to Gardner/Valiente etc up to the older writers like the Farrars. He has made a Key Connection with the Aurum Solis writings, which i seem to remember were also in Dr Santee’s library and which i have read since then but not putting together this connection, to the Coven of the Catta’s method of making the evoking and invoking pentagrams in a certain way that are not G.’.D.’. per se but evolved out of them from the Masons to Freemasons to Aurum Solic even through Crowley and the Ordo Templi Orientis in their German line through Doc Santee aka Merlin to the COC through many many skilled insightful witch Pries/esses up to we who still practice this system today, a chain unbroken. (sorry for these long comman punctuated sentences written late last night which i am trying to clean up a little in the light of day).

I am just going to past his synopsis by email straight into this post, and kudos and praise to AA for his weaving data to reality. So, to get back to the point, why does the Coven of the Catta make our pentagrams this way? Well, read on. Like i said this insight and connection hit me like a rock, Duh, after 33+ years if questioning it and where it came from but i know for me it works so i guess i am just being OCD cerebral ceremonial magickally anal retentive ADD all these years but then besides my natural tendencies that is also how i was trained to be by Lady Phoebe. I did the pentagrams the way my teacher Lady Phoebe taught me, not questioning why, and she had them formulated not by Sybil Leek that i know of but apparently by that Master Magickian who had been all across Great Britain and old Europe having been initiated into (well read my book for the full long list) all that was out there in England, Germany, France, Italy and Northern Africa). OK i will stop rambling and present out guest post from Frater Aren –

Evoking and Invoking Pentagrams of the Coven of the Catta

by Apprentice Acolyte Frater Aren 0*

“Recently I was reading back through a very unique BOS published by the Tetian Press several years ago in a relatively small private printing. The tradition described, reading between the lines and going by similarities in the rituals and circle casting procedures also referenced in Persuasions of the Witche’s Craft by T.M. Luhrmann , seems to date back to one of the older BTW Covens in the UK and at the very least dates back to a coven active and practicing in the 1970’s in Surrey per the authors description . I was struck by the fact that the invoking pentagram drawn by the coven seemed to be that of a banishing earth pentagram though it was called a sign of invoking. This struck me as being very curious and at first I thought perhaps it was simply due to the influence of the Lesser Banishing and Invoking rituals of the Pentagram historically given to new students in the Golden Dawn Society but that sent me off in another direction the more I looked and brought to mind how we in the COC draw the invoking pentagrams to all four quarters when calling upon the Mighty ones and Archangels using what “appears” to be an invoking fire pentagram. In the COC I at first assumed that the invoking fire pentagrams were used because when calling upon the archangels you were calling upon Higher Beings of Light and so fire seemed an appropriate element but the more I looked I thought maybe there was more, so I went back to the original template that I had first seen years ago when starting to study witchcraft and magick which was the Golden Dawn method of drawing the invoking and banishing pentagrams upon the air. To be honest this method has always seemed rather cumbersome to me and though I respect its etheric ties and associations there are inconsistencies. This by accident led me to another society , and set of correspondences , known as the Aurum Solis , founded in England in 1897. In this tradition we see a much different and simpler method of drawing an invoking and banishing pentagram , by starting at the point of the element you wish to invoke and them moving clockwise through the drawing of the pentagram back to the starting point , and to banish beginning at the point of the element in question and moving counter clockwise through the drawing of the pentagram back to the starting point. This to me seemed to resonate and also seemed to answer, or at least raise a possible answer , to my earlier questions about the “seeming” banishing earth pentagram in the BTW BOS , as in the Aurom Solis method, this would in fact be an invoking earth pentagram , beginning at the earth point and moving clockwise up to Spirit , down to Fire ,etc. This also and most importantly led me back the the COC invoking pentagram ; seemingly an invoking fire pentagram per the Golden Dawn set of correspondences but from the Aurom Solis method it would actually be an invoking Spirit pentagram which made perfect sense given the covens use and method involving it. Is this right ? Correct ? Who knows but to me it answers the questions I had  quiets my OCD and makes an interesting kind of sense.”

A Visit to Dr Santee’s Grave

I filmed this a couple months ago on my cell phone, and recently upgraded the BSSS blog to Prime so i can upload videos, soooo, we shall see if it works on this blog or not. If not I will just delete it…. OK it does not load on the COC blog so i will try to load it here then reblog it there but doubt that will work. Enjoy and Blessed Be.

Some rambling on festivals, devotions and change

Our coven uses the old Catholic names also for our cross quarter rituals, and i personally celebrate Michaelmas on the 27th and hope to attend the old German Lutheran church in the Burg and hope there is a Michael devotion there. We did not get together for Autumnal Equinox but some did their own rituals on their own. Since it was new moon i mostly did Tibetan Buddhist pujas. Of course the Big Ritual of All Hallows is coming up soon, and with the temp here of 42*F this am its definitely starting to look like fall. Thanks “A Forest Door” for your post and for the reblog here. BB.

The Story of Mabon

Thanks Rick for reminding us about giving thanks also for “what we have harvested” over the year from spring equinox or even Candlemass onwards. As we sew so shall we reap so to speak. Since i did not write a Mabon post i am gong to reblog yours so thank you and blessed be. Lee / Shawnus

A Week in the Life of an Appalachian Witch 13-20 September 2014 – Diggin’ Dem Rocks and Bones and Back Alley Treasures

14 September (2)

Last weekend was the always much anticipated Central PA Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show held at the beautiful Zembo Shrine Temple which is an old Masonic Hall whose architecture is of an Islamic Mosque. It is in the northern part of the Burg next to a tall Egyptian obelisk and artificial lake which is beautifully maintained. As you may well know the Masons trace back their lineage to the Temple of Solomon, to Egypt, and to the Templars.

13 September (18)

I have been gong to this show, which is next to a hospital i worked at for 20 years, for about 30+ years, missing only last year due to this illness. So it was a delight to go back again. About a half dozen people i know said they wanted to go but no one showed up so i went alone. Funny thing  was i met a lot of people from the past there as we stumbled to remember each others names, some of them witches from covens past. I also met a very interesting couple there who live near to me, and we talked and exchanged email addys and phone numbers but unfortunately in the piles of papers and cards i brought home i somehow lost theirs. And in my stupidity of being blissed out by all these crystals (i truly do get a buzz there, plus as i said the lighting is so bright and with peering through jewelry loops at specimens i always get an eye strain headache too) i gave them a previous email addy, duh. So if you two are reading this my addy is not the one i gave you.

The Shriners, a part of the large Masonic organization, are known for their charity work and the Shriners Children’s Hospital which give out free medical care to children. This statue in front of the building is fairly new and shows a Shriner carrying a child to a healthier life.

On the bricks leading up to this statue are the names of various Masonic Shriner philanthropic organizations and donors.

Crystal Hugging Rock Hound Heaven !

As you can see from the link above the show is put on by the Central PA Rock and Mineral Club who are enthusiasts of all things mineralogical. In the pics below, taken with permission by the VP of the club, various members display their rock, mineral and fossil finds, and what types of jewelry or displays they make of them. I tried to get everyone’s name into the pictures, but the lighting was very harsh and to have good pics of the displays i had to cut those off. I think this year’s displays were the best of any i have seen in years gone by, and told several members that to their delight. They are most proud of what they do, “rock hounds” as they and i are called. Below are some pictures of their displays.   13 September (8) 13 September (9) 13 September (10)   13 September (25) 13 September (26) 13 September (30) 13 September (32) 13 September (38) 13 September (39)

I was allowed to photograph these pictures of some Really Fancy rock and resin carvings from Carved Opal and Obsidian by Larry and Pamela Castle who do not have a website but their addy is The resin and bone carvings (i assume water buffalo) are from Bali and are most intricate. The carved crystal and other stone skulls are from Mexico and China i think, don’t really remember, memory seems wiped out at this point of the show LOL. Glad i did not have much cash or a credit card of whoosh $10K would be gone in an instant LOL. Really beautiful trinkets and tools of magicke for sure….

The show was in two large rooms of the Zembo Shrine and i forgot to tell you they are vaulted with inlaid blue and other colour tiles, really spectacular and i guess i should have taken a picture of them. Anyway back out at the hallway entrance where the club’s members had their displays above there was also a large nice display from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and i took some pics of their display, having asked permission, and the rep said yea its your tax dollars that paid for this LOL. Anyway there were lots of free geological maps of the state and displays of fossils and various types of minerals from around the state which you can see at the link above. So the second day i was at the show another rep was talking about this book and i was like WTF i never saw That book before, and i looked through it and amazingly it was in a large font i could read so i got online a couple days later and ordered one for a very reasonable price as it has been reprinted many times. He was interested in the caves and i filled him in on who HP Blavatsky was.

14 September (5)

One of the most enjoyable things about this show, and it doesn’t cost a cent (well $6 to get in) is tapping the brains of all these rock hounds for knowledge. If you see a fossil or stone they know ALL about it and you get a mini lecture about geological history. I learn Soooo much just talking with the dealers there. Oh, and two of them are actually Witches from Philly who sell witchy stone stuff and books and lapidary equipment! I always give them a “Blessed Be” and salute when i see them.

One of the nicest and most knowledgeable dealer there is smiling Mike who always cuts me deals especially if you buy int he last hour of the last day, a technique i have learned when people are packing up and ready for the long trip home and want to lighten their load of stones and make their wallet heavier instead. I never realized it until i went to his website that his wife is into healing with crystals! She was not there that i saw so i will have to email him through the site and talk about this next time we meet. I did not take any pics of his display as i think i had maxed out my cell camera memory at this point but you can see what he has at his website above.

OK back home again. Went out to the southern edge of the property as the sun’s rays lit low and found lots of red. First, this red flower of a ginseng plant, a handful of them actually, not going to touch them as they are so rare and protected. Maybe next year i will ask its spirit to lend me a root. (sorry for the poor quality of the next few pics taken on rough ground). And in the same area, where the great Bear Oak Tree fell another tree had partially fallen last year and completely this year revealing what looked like an interesting twisted piece of ironwood, but upon walking there i see red berries everywhere on low shrub trees. Rowan Trees !!! I have No idea i had Rowans growing out here. Rowan, like the one that Doc Santee had growing between his house and the bookhouse (now cut down)! Rowan, like the besom Dutch Jeff gave me cut from that very tree! Rowan, one of the high end most sought woods for a wand in many BTW traditions. So, the next day i chose a little one, well rooted in the rocks of the edge of the mountain, and barehanded i dug dug dug and gently trying to not break even the smallest root was able to extract one, leaving some of my own blood from my dirty scuffed hands. And today i planted it in the rocks on the stream bank on this side, using some rooting enzyme and lots of the red mulch from the inside of the fallen bear oak tree. Oh i hope she survives and flourishes…..

17 September (7) 17 September (8) Here she is planted on the stream side in a red bucket before going into the earth along with the standing stones and a funny little Gargoyle. 19 September (4)

Back alley “dumpster diving” – So i drive past St Bernadette, which i have not been to in a couple months, and see a car parked there and want to tell Father John who was helping the Syrian refugees in Turkey (don’t see that much on the news anymore, guess America and the EU got bored) to tell him i am still around, just was waiting for him to come back to replace the theologian exorcist in training who replaced him for awhile, you know, the one who truly wanted to exorcise me when he found out i was a WITCH. I knocked on various doors, but he was not there. So, down the one way alley i go when there my eyes behold an old rod iron spiked gate and other “interesting junk”. Jeep into park and i start calling out Hello and knocking carefully on various doors (it is Perry County, but i am armed too). Finally an old guy comes out and and i ask him how much for the rod iron gate and he said just take it. How about the fold out 9 foot rod iron vesica pisces gateway with the fleur-de-lis on top? Free. How about that old Gargoyle on your porch next to the nicer one? Oh i was going to just smash that old thing up, just take it. How about …. No my wife would kill me if i gave that away. So i get these stuffed into the Jeep with the tail window open and here are pics of two of them. I love Free. LOL.

Well enough of this rambling week in the life post. Guess i will just post it, take a bath, then come back to edit it later. Enjoy and Blessed Be this New Moon and Autumnal Equinox !

PS – Almost forgot about Dem Bones – earlier in the spring i had buried a road kill cat in the red mulch of the base of the fallen bear oak tree. I dug and dug and dug until i started to hear people speaking Chinese and found nothing. Something must have taken it. A month or so ago when at the local sporting goods store someone brought in pics of a huge ground hog they had shot. i think it weighed almost 45 pounds. I felt bad and told the guy i would like to extract the bones. He said well it is out in the truck and i inherited the carcass which i buried in the same fallen tree, different spot. Yesterday i dug him/her up and she was all bones and i soaked them in some bleach water then will have another boned creature to honour in their death at the black cabin. No pics available at this time as it is a work in progress…

Lady Tille the Bee and Braucherei by Silver RavenWolf #Braucherei

Sometimes the most powerful magicke is done sitting in a rocking chair just formulating it in one’s mind, which is very Buddhist. Ritual and spells and chants take a back seat to a Witch/Magickian concentrating their Will either singularly or with others with or without a circle or evocation because we know how to Invoke the God/ess and to channel her/his energies for healing. All ov our “bending” is done naturally, just being what we are, human beings who happen to be Witches, just sitting on our rockers in Dullsburg at the third quarter of the Moon. Yes ultimately re her allergy to bees n her not having an epipen readily available is not good, but u all filled in the blanks in time n space to help her in Malkuth and in Tiphareth especially. This is why we r Witches – To Heal w Powwow n Witchcraft n Shamanism n whatever system’s tool we have at our collective at hand. BB. L/S

honeybee Braucherei magick often focuses on healing common injuries, such as the sting of a bee. You might not think such a practice is necessary now that we have modern science. Yeah? Read on.

Lady Tillie the Bee and Braucherei

I often think about the mindset of the German people that practiced Braucherei on a daily basis.  Hardworking.  Practical.  A focus on agriculture, animal husbandry, and the family.  Even the Amish permitted flowers around the property, indicating that since plants were a gift from spirit — they could be celebrated and admired.  One’s property should be well tended — as what shows without indicates what is within.

In Braucherei, protection and healing were mainstays of magick.  What seems silly to us now as far as medicinal work, could kill you if untended back then.  Like a bee sting.  Today, we have Epi Pens and Benadryl, and bracelets to…

A Day in a Life of an Appalachian Witch in Pics and Rambling Thoughts Early September 2014

5 August (8)Almost a Tornado Touchdown – 1

I’m not going to ramble much right now as the main Pastor of the German Lutheran Church in the Burg is coming for a visit, yes a visit to moi, a confessed Witch. He is very tolerant, has no hidden agenda, and is a great person to have deep intellectual theological metaphysical philosophical discussions with.

So, just a few pics from this week that has almost nothing to do with the COC and i really should have put this on the BSSS blog which i will reblog it to. But sometimes i slip over to something more personal here where “da priest” steps outside his formal role and is just “me”.

BTW Jason, Ryan and Amanda who i did the conference call with yesterday regarding your proposal to use me and some other active coven members for a TV series on a year in the life of a witch, and i know you all are exploring my blogs and booklet now – I hope this post won’t be too far out as i am what i am. I am a formal HPT but i am also a human being with many facets, like Everyone  has, even the Pastor arriving shortly. He knows as do i we can both take off our robes and cassocks (figuratively lol) and let our hair down (tho neither of us has much hair lol). It will be a good visit as i get  very lonely here with very few visitors of late.

But then it is summer and everyone is busy and if they are like me i have projects spread across 2 acres, 3 houses, and the inside of this house has every counter top covered with minor projects. Keeps me busy…    10 Seeptember (3)

No i am not a NZ but my Tattoo artist has some obscure war memorabilia like this officers sword given him by his grandfather and yes it is politically incorrect in the taking of it and in the display of it but it is a work of art both aesthetically and as a weapon.

10 Seeptember (9)

Now i look “like one of those types” lol. I have not ridden on the back of a motorcycle since i was a teenager, and a friend brought over one of his many Harleys to give me a ride on these country roads. I Loved it. I may get one someday to save on gas money and know how dangerous they are from having worked in the ER for 7 years. But i Always wear a helmet and full leather. The helmet, shown in detail below,, is Tony BST’s first one which he decorated with the spike and his three sons who also bike decorated with the stickers. Way cool in my opinion. The leather i got for cheap at the Good Will believe it or not.

10 Seeptember (6) 10 Seeptember (7) 10 Seeptember (8)

Some manipulated not too revealing of my mannikin like Doc Santee has his Galatea mannikin based on the story of the artist who made a statue called Galatea which he loved so much it came alive. Well, such things are possible and those of you with some Solomonic Magicke experience know how easy it is to animate an egregore, or for one to manifest itself if the Magickian is not too careful. The whole working is “interesting” and also “dangerous” but that never stopped me, though i am not a fool. I do at times tend to “tread where angels fear of falling” aka the Nephilim who taught us Witchcraft according to out Trad.

10 Seeptember (2)

10 Seeptember (17)

Speaking of the Nephilim any of my true followers remember my previous posts on Samael (if not just type his name into the search bar for posts containing that name). Something very strange happened just before the German Lutheran Pastor arrived and i showed him the Hex House. I had a broken octagonal mirror mounted securely at a stable angle with a nail in front of the base in the open northern window, you know, like the dreaded always sealed up northern doors of Medieval churches. Now, how could a mirror literally jump out of such secure placing, with no wind, with a nail still intact there, and fall face up not face down, like it was literally picked up and thrown down? My theory is the power of the Christian “Priest” finally broke the long spell of Samael meddling in my workings over there, just my theory.I cleaned it up last night and took these manipulated pics before hand to see if there was a pattern. BTW the thing that looks like an alien face is just a piece of round iron in a triangular iron tripod with the base of a dragon ashtray making that image, nothing mystical there. The images are manipulated such that even the totally washed away circle is visible, which is invisible in daylight. When i cleaned up the broken glass i recovered one perfect triangle and 9 perfect sharp curved fang shaped pieces. Right afterwards i hear the loud chilling howl of one of my black panthers again out across the creek. Maybe Samael has taken on the form of a “lion prowling the world” like the Bible says….

12 September (5)

And two days ago under cover of darkness i did something radical with gasoline and thus fire – the sidewalk at the black cabin is So overgrown with small roots and plants, and i have tried to hack it away, so the ole Boy Scout in me just poured gasoline on the 10 meter path and lit her up. Of course i had a water hose in hand and had soaked down the grass and weeds and trees on either side. But it made for some interesting pictures and excited the “closet pyromaniac” (legal fires, not illegal ones of course) in me LOL.

And thus the strange life and pictures Copyright GLHoke 2014 of an Appalachian Witch….

Some footnotes –

The Pastor arrived with a rumble of a 4.3 liter V-8 engine i thought was a Harley and turned out to be an older but pristine Mustang muscle car, silver, racing wheels, over 200,000 miles on it. His alter or rather altar ego? And he was to celebrate his 30th wedding anniversary that night. He also helped me do some physical labour that took two people. And in the end after the mega tour of every temple room and every house and the beautiful land on a beautiful day he said “this land is Holy” and i said “to a Witch All Land and all the Earth is Holy” and he agreed. I think maybe there is a little bit of pagan in him when i had him in the woods, and the Native Spirits liked him.

Raining today, which we need badly, then off to the Central PA Rock and Mineral Show at the Zembo Mosque Masonic Lodge which i have attended every year but one (when i was ill with this Meige) for the last 30+ years. I have no $ to spend but enjoy the rock and crystals and especially picking the brains of the “rock hounds” there.

Oh, and to throw something more into this Louisiana gumbo here is a link that will keep you busy this weekend, tons of downloadable PDFs of various magickal documents that a friend sent me.

A Day in a Life of a PA Witch17 September 2014 – A Visit to Lady Phoebe’s Grave and Big Surprise (LOL) She’s Not Here!

Last weekend i drove up to the Covenstead area about 80 miles away at 2am with no sleep to try to help my Friend and HPS Lady EWH with her mum now mostly bedridden 24 hour care from the company she also works for. I offered various services like painting skills etc but all too soon circumstances flicked in a bipolar way and soon our ways were parted. Blessings to her and her mum in these times of trial.

Anyway, here are some pics from my last few days here and there. Enjoy…..

Don’t try this at home witch novices – tincture of deadly nightshade aka belladonna – eating 4 black berries would cause certain fairly fast but painful dead from atrial tachycardia and thus anoxia to the brain. Why do i make these many witch friends ask? Not to kill anyone, just to learn how to forumulate various herbal preparations. And such a nice purple, like the colour of the skin of the asphyxiated newly dead….. everyone Relax.

I had some selfies showing my leg tattoos of the benign and malevolent Naginis, but they showed too much of something else, so since they were such bad pics anyway i just deleted them here so as to not offend anyone.
